The reflection of my younger self is staring back begging for help. Raised in Detroit and a product of the public school system, I assumed I was going to be the product of my environment. It wasn’t until I began working with at risk girls is when I realized my purpose.
I saw myself in them, the same fears, and the same fight to be seen and heard. And in helping them find their voice, I found my own. Advocacy quickly became part of my journey as I gained a sense of commitment for the women and girls in my community. It was no longer about me, but for those who look like me, the little Black girl striving to be the best she can be.
Now, I show up every day to walk beside women and girls as they uncover their strength. Social work is not just a career, it’s my passion, it’s what I was called to do. It’s the space where my lived experiences meet purpose, where I can offer not just guidance, but understanding.
I’ve learned that healing looks different for everyone, but for me, healing means to advocate for those with no voice as well as those coming after me. The mistakes of my past cannot disappear, but my future is shaped by the lessons they taught me. My healing is in my work, advocacy, and the belief that we all have power to rise.
